Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: We did some big concepts today and I wanted to make sure that we understand them so we did a lot of work together to understand them. We talked about mixed fractions and improper fractions. First we did some work on the carpet with the pizzas and counted the pieces. Next we did A LOT  work together on together on the board and on our whiteboards with our partners. We did some worksheets together afterwards.

I have written out step by step instructions in order to make sure they understand. Everyone had a good understanding and just needs more practice.

Here are the steps:

Math words:

Sum= Answer to an addition question
Product= Answer to a multiplication question
Numerator= Top of the fraction
Denominator= Bottom of the fraction

Improper Fraction to a mixed fraction

1.     See how many times the denominator goes into the numerator. This is the whole number.  Do this by counting up. (E.g. 4,8, 12 etc without going over)
2.     Write down the whole number
3.     Numerator product = the left overs
4.     Left over is numerator. The denominator is the same as the question. Whole number goes in front.

Mixed to Improper

1.     Multiply denominator by the whole number
2.     Add the numerator to the product
3.     Put the sum over the denominator

Mixed to improper

Improper to Mixed

Language: We read chapter 14 and 15 today! They are loving this book so much they don't want to stop reading! We did some worksheets as well and if they aren't finished they need to finish it for homework.

Music: We did our sound scape today! It was so much fun. We noticed all the differences between country sounds and city sounds. City sounds were loud, stressful and involved more items with technology like cars. The country sounds were more peaceful and involved nature.  It was good practice for their sound scape in their project.

UOI: We started working on our summative today! We are having fun creating our own town/city but have to remember that it needs to be realistic according to what we learned.

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we worked on mixed fractions! We started by talking about pizza's and if we order too many and cant finish them all we will have some whole pizzas and some left over. This is when we use a mixed fraction. We did an example on the board and then we did some work on the floor with the cardboard pizza's. They did really well and have a solid understanding of them. Next we did some worksheets to understand the basics and then did some word problems in which they had to determine the number of slices left. They are to determine how many slices are in the whole pizzas first but multiplying or adding, and then add the extras.

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Language: We continued to read Heidi today. We read chapter 12 and 13. Next we completed the worksheets and discussion questions. They are loving this book!

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we presented our debate! They practiced and then we did our debate. They learned that neither side is better because you both need each other in order to survive! Good job everyone!

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we learned about equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but show exactly the same amount. You can make equivalent fractions by halving or doubling the numerator and denominator by the same number. We did a bunch of examples on the board together of how fractions may look different but can have the same value, for example: 1/2 and 6/12. We used the equivalent fraction blocks to see fractions that were equivalent and then the students completed a worksheet in class and we took it up all together. Once that was completed they tried to solve puzzles that included equivalent fractions represent in numbers and pictures. We talked about how we can draw in extra lines or take some away if we are having trouble visualizing a fraction with bigger or smaller pieces of a pie. Finally we did some textbook work.

Language: We continued our novel study, “Heidi.” We read chapters 10 and 11 together. We made a lot of inferences about what could happen next in the book or how the characters are feeling.

UOI:  We continued to work on our debate. We talked about how we need to use the strengths of either the country or the city as our reasoning and provide PROOF! They will be presenting their debate tomorrow.
